How to Spend Leisure Time

Nowadays, many kids have no idea what to do with their free time other than watching TV, playing video games, or surfing the internet. While none of these forms of entertainment are necessarily bad, they can waste huge amounts of time that could be used in a productive way. They also allow you to zone out and shut down your brain, which can be very unhealthy if it happens too much. It's about time we thought up some new ideas on how to better spend our leisure time.

                First, make sure that it really is free time, and not time that needs to be spent doing schoolwork, chores, work, or taking care of some other responsibility. Once that is done, there are many options of what to do for fun. If it is a nice day, there are dozens of activities to do outdoors. Backyard sports are always fun; you can play a game of soccer, football, Frisbee, volleyball, or whatever else you wish with your siblings or friends. To mix things up, you could try making up your own game! Go on a walk, run, hike, or a bike ride. Go to a park or playground. If your family or friends own a boat or canoe, you could take a trip to a lake. While you’re at it, bring your bathing suits so you can go swimming as well!  On a weekend or in summer, you could even take along a picnic and stay for the day!

The summer months are a nice break from school, but they can get long and boring. How about starting a weekly get-together with your friends to help keep you all busy? You could have Craft Day, Board Game Day, Movie Day (or night,) Sports Day, or just have each other over to hang out. Organizing a neighborhood barbeque or Bring Your Own Meat would be a fun and easy way to get to know your neighbors better! Summer free time is also a wonderful opportunity to get involved with a ministry that reaches a need you are passionate about. Giving your time to serve others can be a huge blessing, both to them, and to you, and in summer you don’t have as many other responsibilities to take care of.

And don’t forget about winter fun! Sledding, skiing, and snowboarding are all great ways to stay active and work off some energy during the cold, snowy season when you’re mostly trapped inside. If you live fairly close to a frozen lake, ice skating is another winter activity.

If it is not a good day to be outdoors, there are also many fun indoor activities. If you like to read, a good book is a great place to start. A handwritten letter is always fun to receive, so why not write one to a friend or family member? Free time is also a wonderful time to pursue a hobby that interests you, such as art, woodcarving, photography, or playing a musical instrument.

Don’t stop here--these ideas are just a start! There are so many things to do in your leisure time that don’t involve staring at a screen! Remember that time is a gift, even if it is “free.” Let us remember to value it and use it wisely!

Introducing // Ella Shalom

        This is my (Johanna) 4th blog post and one of my favorites that I have written. On September 17 at 5:09 a.m. a miracle happened. Ella Shalom, 8lb 6oz was born. She was 21 in. long. Beautiful Myers baby No. 11. She is so adorable and she turned 1 month old last Monday. Around 5:30 of the day she was born, I was woken up by my mom's friend, who was at the birth, saying, "Joey, there's a new baby in your house, and you get to cut the umbilical cord." I woke up immediately and crept quietly into Mama's room. In there I found the midwife who has delivered every baby from Seth down, and four asisstants, and Coco (my grandma) and my 3 oldest sisters. I went to the other side of the bed and the girls whispered to me, "it's a girl." My heart gave a great leap and right at that moment in all the excitement I just stopped and whispered a quiet, "Thank you, LORD!!!"

The Time-Worn Piano

         Near a window in a large house, an old, well-loved piano sits silently. Mellow lamplight casts a golden glow on the solid rust-brown wood. The surface, scratched and dented, bears testament to the length of its life and the many children who play around and upon it. Carefully raising the lid of the instrument, a young pianist seats herself upon the creaking bench. Her fingers softly touch the keys. Like the singing of some unknown tongue, a breathtaking melody begins to flow from the battered spinet. Clear and sweet, the strains are drawn out under the hands of the musician. Floating up to the roof, music fills the whole house. Though the strings are antique and the ivory worn, the piano still brims with life and sound to spill forth and delight all who hear!

Camping Can Be So Much Fun!

My first camping trip was at Tunnel Campground, and I went with Gram and Grandpa. I had so much fun!! On the first day we got up and started getting breakfast ready and then we ate. After that we started getting lunches ready because we were going on a walk. We walked about 3 miles (round trip). After our walk we came back to the campsite. Right across the road there was a fallen tree that a ranger had told Gram we could use. So we dragged it across the road and then Grandpa and I cut it up for firewood. Then I chopped it smaller with the hatchet.

Gram started grilling the hamburgers for dinner while Grandpa and I started getting stuff for the fire. Then we ate and started the fire. When it died we went inside and played some games. I would love to go camping again.

Summer Trip Photo Style // Part 2

Hello again, everyone! I am back with more photos of our summer trip!

After Norris Geyser Basin, we took a hike up to Artist's Paint Pots. I got some neat photos along the way!




And then the paint pots! It was so interesting to see bubbling, boiling mud. It was a little bit amusing as well!

I didn't realize at the time, but this pool is shaped like a heart! How fun is that?
The paint pots were our last stop for Day 1. On Day 2 we set out to see the greatest attraction at Yellostone: Old Faithful!

I apologize for the hat in the corner. :)

There is a neat story about how we got to see Old Faithful go off. There were hundreds of people gathered around Old Faithful when we arrived, so we walked over and decided to wait and see if it was going to go off soon even though we had no idea when it was supposed to. Within about three minutes of us arriving at the geyser, it began to go off! We were not rushed, but there was no wait either! Later in the day, we came back, got dinner at the visitor center, and sat at a table by a window that looked out toward the geyser. There were tons of people gathered around it again, so we figured it would probably go off again soon. We watched it all through the meal, but nothing happened. We went outside and some of us walked over to the geyser. Again, in just a couple minutes, it went off again! It was such a neat gift from the Lord, and a reminder that He cares even about the little things, and delights to give good things to His children.

While at Old Faithful, we also got to go inside the Old Faithful Inn.








 It is a huge, amazing old log hotel. It was so much fun to be able to see it!
